What Happens When I Get My Braces Removed?

It seems like it’s been forever, but it’s finally the day you get your braces off. You’ll be eating hard candy, apples, corn on the cob, and potato chips soon enough. For now, though, you’re probably wondering, “What Happens When I Get My Braces Removed?”

What Happens When I Get My Braces Removed?

Make your appointment first. Remember that our offices are practicing COVID-19 safety protocols. Your parents may have to wait outside the office, so prepare yourself for that. Brush and floss your teeth before your appointment. When you make your appointment, ask if there is any other special preparation you need. This appointment may take an hour or longer.

The orthodontist uses special pliers to remove the brackets from your teeth. This may create some odd, tugging sensations. You will also hear some strange noises, and maybe some cracking and popping. Those are normal sensations and sounds. Once the brackets are off, any remaining bonding material needs to be scraped off of your teeth. More sounds and weird feelings, but it’s all part of the process.

After removing your braces, the orthodontist might perform a thorough cleaning or recommend that your return to your family dentist for that procedure. Your mouth may be tender for the first few days. You’ll also feel odd because you have developed callouses inside your mouth. Not having the braces on will feel different.

A Retainer? How Long Will I Have to Wear This?

Yes, unfortunately, getting your braces off doesn’t mean you are done. In order to allow your teeth to settle into their new positions permanently, your orthodontist may prescribe a retainer. The amount of time you will need the retainer will vary depending on how bad your original alignment was.

It takes the ligaments in your mouth (periodontal ligaments) about a year to “memorize” their new positions. Using a retainer will make sure that your new smile stays perfectly aligned. You might wear a retainer for several years, so please prepare yourself for that. Each case is different and your orthodontist will give you specific instructions for your retainer.

There are three basic types of retainers. Essix Retainers are clear plastic and resemble Invisalign tray aligners. Hawley Retainers are made of acrylic and metal. Permanent Retainers are attached to the back of your teeth. Your orthodontist will determine the best type of retainer for you.

Don’t Go Hog Wild, but Do Enjoy Your New Smile

Remember, your mouth will feel a little odd for the first few days after you have your braces removed. You will adjust to that, just like you adjusted when you first got your braces. You may experience some minor tenderness or discomfort. Your teeth may not be strong enough to immediately bite into that hard apple, so take it slow. Continue your oral hygiene routine, with regular brushing and flossing.
